Patanjali's Yoga Sutra Workbook
Paperback – June 9, 2023
About this Book:
The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali have been fraught with poor translations and even poorer commentaries over the many years since its codification. This is partly due to the difficulties translating Sanskrit into other languages as well as the multiple meanings of each Sanskrit word depending on its context. Further complicating translation is the lack of verbs throughout the 196 sutras. Some 70 percent of the yoga sutras are written in apposition, allowing for many liberties to be taken in translating them into another language.
Also challenging for the more serious student is the tendency for spiritual teachers to translate the sutras into a meaning more suitable for their cultural and spiritual biases. Rarely do we find teachers who abandon their personal prejudices for a more universal interpretation. Still further complicating their translation is the tendency of some Sanskrit experts to claim the use of idiomatic expressions throughout the sutras where none were intended.
This workbook is designed to assist the serious student to translate the sutras into useable axioms with clear and meaningful content. Each sutra is written out in the English alphabet (Roman). Under each sutra is space for literal translation, space for paraphrasing, and space to write personal revelations.
The opposing page to each sutra is a Sanskrit to English dictionary specific to that sutra with the various word translations as well as the Sanskrit root of each word.
My hope is this workbook empowers the yoga student by allowing them to translate each sutra for themselves. By doing so, a deeper and more esoteric understanding is achieved preparing the way for spiritual realization.
